A new pickling and preserving club is popping up at Open House this autumn, hosted by the 10 Trees team!
We’ll be cosying up in the cafe and kitchen to create beautiful things made from nature, together. Think pickled sloes, rosehip brandy, calendula balm or willow lanterns. We’ll get you started with some ideas of our own, and see where the energy takes us:
Tuesday 30th September - balm-making
Tuesday 7th October - fruit alcohols and cordial
Tuesday 14th October - quick pickles
Tuesday 21st October - making with willow
An urn of Open House tea will be on offer to warm our cockles, too.

What to bring: bring and share your own olive oil and beeswax, some small jars and any essential oils, plus the main ingredient for your balm. This could be things like lavender (for sleep), eucalyptus (for colds), comfrey (for grazes), calendula (for skin healing), plantain (for stings) or mint (for lip balm) - your choice! To get a stronger balm, bring your plants almost to the boil in your olive oil and let it sit for a day at home first.
-
What to bring: bring and share your own fruit, some pre-sterilised bottles or jars (we prefer wide-necked like kilner), the same weight of sugar as for fruit, and any alcohol you want to use. Think sloes and gin, rosehips and brandy, quince and vodka, or any fruit you might have gathered and frozen this year.
-
What to bring: bring and share your favourite quick pickle recipe and the ingredients to make it, including the vinegar. We like sloes, kohl rabbi, radish and cauliflower, and we love a good fennel or chilli and ginger pickle. What you make is up to you!
-
What to bring: bring and share any willow, hazel or other natural materials you have been wanting to project with. We’ll be trying out weaving techniques and lantern making, but we would welcome all ideas and willow wisdom into this space!
