Join Open House and the National Trust to learn about hawthorn and the special place it occupies in our landscape and food heritage.
Over a bowl of warming soup, we’ll process haws from specially-selected local trees and save the seeds for planting in our community tree nursery. As well as some hawthorn cordial tasting, we’ll make the haw pulp into a batch of ketchup - an autumnal delight for the table and a powerful heart medicine.
Everyone will get to take a sample away - and there will be a hawthorn-themed craft for little people to get involved in too.
Over the course of the evening, we’ll also explore the qualities of this precious native species and hear about the National Trust’s plans to use hawthorn to create rich, diverse homes for wildlife in its ambitious local landscape restoration projects in the Peak.

Our community garden at 10 Trees is home to a tree nursery tended by the community in support of work by the National Trust to restore the local landscape of the Peak District. The haw seeds processed at this event will grow alongside alder, oak and other species and ultimately be planted out in the wider landscape to provide homes for wildlife and improve soil health. Pickle Club is Open House’s much-loved preserving and making social club.
We cosy up in the Open House cafe and kitchen to create beautiful things made from nature, together - often bringing what we have from home and sharing what we can.
